A Quick History of the Arabian Mocha Coffee Bean

Over the ages, tales of the origins of coffee and of the origins of Arabian Mocha from Yemen have been combined into a fanciful blend of fact and fiction. It is, however, widely accepted that the Arabica bush is a native of Ethiopia but it is in Yemen that the plant was first cultivated. For the most part, the world’s introduction to coffee came via Yemen’s Red Sea port of Mocha, and from there, Yemen held a monopoly on coffee production between 1500 and the late 1700′s. During this period, the terms mocha and coffee became synonymous, and mocha’s peculiar, chocolaty aftertaste was the prized quality the world sought in their coffee. Later, as chocolate became known around the world, it and the taste of Yemen’s coffee became linked in people’s mind.
